Summer is officially upon us and that means lots of relaxation, sunshine and celebrating… and for many of us, house guests. I love hosting family and friends in my home- I take such joy in having a well designed and organised home, and part of that is ensuring that my guests have everything they need at an arm’s reach. This leads to stress free holiday hosting for my husband as I, as we aren’t feeling bombarded by questions about where this or that is.
Interior Design: The Guest Bedroom- our guide to the essentials
As both my parents and in-laws live overseas, my husband and I have become accustomed to hosting for weeks at a time in our home, which can be a trying experience for anyone when your guest room isn’t in order!
Lots of experience has shown me that by taking time to properly furnish and style your spare room, guests feel well taken care of and more relaxed, greatly reducing the stress of being a 24/7 hostess! Here is a list of my essentials to the perfect guest room.

Invest in a couple nice sets of linens- as guest rooms get relatively little use compared to your other bedrooms, a nice set should last and last. I like to ensure I have lots of pillow options, both firm and soft to suit all preferences. Each guest should have two nice pillows each on the bed, and I often stash extra options easily accessed in the room’s wardrobe. A lightweight doona paired with extra blankets at the foot of the bed ensure some nighttime temperature control. Plenty of fluffy bath and beach towels are also a must!
Always ensure there’s ample space for guests to put away their clothes and personal items- no one wants to live out of a suitcase and wear wrinkled clothes for weeks on end! If you don’t have built in wardrobes in the room, a vintage dresser and bedsides with storage are a great option. In a pinch, a freestanding clothes rack for hanging items is an essential.
I like to express my love for family and friends who are visiting by ensuring their rooms have lovely hotel- like touches. It’s so important to make guest feel wanted and welcomed upon arrival from their sometimes very long journeys. A handwritten welcome note, bedside reading (I recommend Monocle’s travel guide series, chock full of Sydney gems!) and fresh flowers go a long way to make a room feel like home.

The Wall Bed
A dedicated guest bedroom can be an impossible luxury in terrace homes, so what to do when you want to accomodate the occasional guest, but also want to make the most of that space when not in use? A wall or ‘murphy’ bed is a great solution. You’ll need to have the cupboard professionally designed and built as the mechanics of wall beds can be quite tricky. When selecting a system, focus on a quality mattress inclusion (i recommend trying before purchase or relying on a designer to select). A wall bed should be able to be easily raised and lowered by a single person after installation. This wall bed designed for a client in Manly was so comfortable, my clients had a guest stay for months on it, in absolute comfort!
